Policy Watch: Speaker McCarthy is out – what happens to the Spending Bill?
Yesterday, Freedom Caucus member Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) did what no Congressman has done before. He successfully ousted a sitting Speaker of the House in a Motion to Vacate.
The slim Republican majority in the House of Representatives: 222 Republicans to 213 Democrats (the tightest margin in nine decades) meant that Gaetz had the easier job tallying up support against McCarthy. If a unified Democratic caucus would vote for the Motion to Vacate, Gaetz only needed to sway 4 other Republican representatives to give McCarthy the boot.
In total, 8 Republicans voted to end McCarthy’s Speakership: Andy Biggs of Arizona, Ken Buck of Colorado, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Eli Crane of Arizona, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Bob Good of Virginia, Matt Rosendale of Montana, and Nancy Mace of South Carolina who is considered the most surprising addition to the rank-and-file rebels given her more moderate record.
After a series of eventful days on Capitol Hill, we present our key takeaways below. We remain committed to covering and sharing our perspective as the situation continues to evolve.
