Russian Coalition Holds Up
It’s worth rounding off this piece with a quick tour to the UN. Back in 2022, the UN voted strongly to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Strongly in the sense that a clear majority of nations voted in favor (141 yes, 5 against, 35 abstaining). Last week, the UN voted yet again – this time on support for a Ukrainian based peace plan – so basically another referendum on whether you support Ukraine or not. And strikingly, the UN voted almost identically to last year (141 yes, 7 against, 32 abstaining). So in real terms, the Russian coalition of nations has absolutely held up. Nicaragua and Mali have even swung to direct Russian support, while at least 3 billion people are in Russia’s camp through “abstaining”. That’s very remarkable and something to keep in mind in the West.
